INLUS Webinar – Fisheries Management & the Arctic
Join us for a discussion of Arctic Fisheries with INLUS Member Lauren Fields who works for the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. (NOAA)
What constitutes a border in the ocean? And whose border is it? Fish don’t recognize national claims! International law and cooperation govern the management of some of the ocean’s fish stocks on the high seas. Today’s webinar will describe what it means to manage international fish stocks and introduce a new and emerging area for management: the Central Arctic Ocean.
Lauren Fields received her PhD in 2015 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Antarctic fish physiology. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Holyoke College in Biological Science and Medieval Studies. She works for the National Marine Fisheries Service as a Foreign Affairs Specialist in the office of International Affairs and Seafood Inspection. She was a 2019 Fulbright Iceland Ministry for Foreign Affairs Arctic Scholar at the University of Akureyri in Akureyri, Iceland, where she researched future fisheries management practices and opportunities in the Central Arctic Ocean.
