Program Description

“Hello and greetings from Iceland…”

With his signature greeting at the beginning of his video reports, Gylfi Gylfason starts another installment of his unique explorations on the latest turn of events with the volcanic activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula, just west of Reykjavik.

Gylfi is the developer of the YouTube channel, “Just Icelandic,” which he created to tell stories about Iceland and its culture for the enjoyment of the rest of the world. He now has over 30, 000 subscribers and in addition to his extremely popular coverage of the recent volcanic and earthquake activity, he also features an eclectic mix of dozens of stories featuring local communities in Iceland, Icelandic history, corny, comic skits and even a one-minute video of popcorn being popped by the heat from lava.

With the aid of his drone in the sky, Gylfi gets the viewer up close while he offers his often humorous and unique perspective as a citizen reporter who is not afraid to show the country, including its challenges and shortcomings.

During his INLUS webinar presentation, Gylfi will give an overview of Iceland’s incredibly active volcanic history, before focusing in on the most recent volcanic activity taking place very near Iceland’s largest city, Reykjavik. As he often does in his reporting, Gylfi will summarize the latest developments by offering his own predictions about what to expect in the near and distant future.

You may have stopped following the volcano story during the recent quiet period. However, in the last two months the region has entered a more active phase. In his latest video reports, Gylfi has been highlighting recent earthquake “swarms” and relaying warnings from the experts that this volcanic eruption is far from over.

On a recent video, he concluded the presentation stating that the volcano experts are saying we need to be prepared for the “big one,” before sending his viewers “best regards from the earthquake and volcano island of Iceland.”just icelandic header
