Iceland Search and Rescue -INLUS Webinar
Life in Iceland is complicated by natural forces…
Volcanic eruptions can endanger entire towns, like Grindavík in 2024. Extreme floods can destroy bridges and roads to rural areas. Windstorms and snowstorms can make travel impossible.
How does Iceland cope with all these potential disasters?
The concept of an Iceland search and rescue group was formed by actions of women in the Westman Islands in 1918 looking for a way to provide some mean of lifesaving for the fishermen. Established in 1928, Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue has evolved into so much more. Now, with more than 4500 volunteers, ICE-SAR is involved in emergency situations all across Iceland at any time of day or night.
