In a little more than a month, Iceland will celebrate the beginning of summer!
Here in North America, we’re still thinking about Spring and with the changing of the seasons, the Icelandic National League of the United States has just posted its spring quarter newsletter, Connect.
This issue features a roundup of recent local Icelandic club events.
And for anyone still thinking about participating in the two Snorri Programs’ Iceland adventure this summer, there are some rare openings. In the Snorri (20-30 age group) five-week program, a spot has opened up, and also a couple of opportunities in the Snorri Plus program (30+ age group). Our frontpage article has a link to the Snorri website and a helpful video that gives a good sense of the two programs. But if you want to “not be a tourist, be a Snorri” you’d better hurry to catch the 2026 season.
For the folks interested in Nordic cooking, we have a recipe for you to try: Hafrakex. We’re launching a recipe feature. Susan Sigurdson Powers and Jen Nelson are highlighting some of their favorites.
Many of their recipes are adapted from the Borg Memorial Home Auxiliary Cookbook. You can read the history of the home, and if you want your own copy of the cookbook, we have a handy link to get you started.
We also have an article on one of the Icelandic Member Organizations of the INLUS, Icelandic Roots. This all-volunteer organization has announced its 2026 focus: exploring the Icelandic settlements across North America. They are asking if you have insight on a long-forgotten settlement, to contribute what you know to the project.
And finally, if you are going to Iceland this year, or have in the past, the INLUS is gearing up for another photo contest. To inspire photographers, we have sprinkled some of last year’s entries into this edition. Full contest details will be in our next Connect.
